Ten simple things that would have a huge positive effect on the environment: How many are happening in your house?
Can you think of any more? Let us know and we'll add them to the list. Contact Us! Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Most water heaters are set at 140 Fahrenheit. Turning the setting down 20 degrees will save about 8 percent in energy costs! Properly maintain your vehicle. Properly inflated tires and a well-tuned engine will save gas and prevent excess emissions Changing light bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps. (CFL) These bulbs use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer. Use less toxic cleaners. Single-ingredient, common household materials such as baking soda, vinegar, or plant-based soaps and detergents can often do the job on your carpet or other surfaces. Soap and water has been shown to keep surfaces as free of bacteria as antibacterial soaps do. Recycle and buy recycled materials. Add one new item to your recycling cart that you haven't recycled before, like steel cans plastic bottles or junk mail. Complete the recycling loop by purchasing products made from recycled materials such as building and decking materials, furniture, and paper. Save your plastic grocery bags. Reuse the bags for other things like waste basket liners, or save all your plastic bags for a few months and then takes them back to the store. Most national grocery chains have recycle bins up front for this. Compost Pile. Create a compost pile in your backyard for fertilizing your plants rather than using store bought fertilizers. Go Paperless. Shift your monthly bills over to online or email based bills. If you're one who never reads junk-mail (like most people), sign up for the national do-not-mail list. This will dramatically cut down on how much mail you are getting from advertisers. Put up a birdhouse instead of using pesticides. Making or buying a birdhouse and putting it in your yard will attract birds to your yard that will eat bugs you don't want around. Shorten your shower time by 60 seconds. If everyone did this for just one month, we'd save millions and millions and millions of gallons!
